Abstract:

In the first part of this seminar, we present a general overview on the finite difference lattice Boltzmann models based on Gauss quadratures. The objective of the LB models is to recover the evolution of the first few moments of the particle distribution function, e.g., the mass, momentum and energy densities. The homogeneous relaxation problem will be used to briefly illustrate the behavour of Lattice Boltzmann models of various orders.

The second part is dedicated to microfluidics applications. In the context of Couette flow between parallel plates, we validate our results by comparison to Direct Simulation Monte Carlo data in the nonlinear regime. Flows in curvilinear coordinates are implemented using the vielbein formalism, which allows the velocity space degrees of freedom to be defined independently of the underlying geometry. We illustrate the capabilities of this formalism in the context of the circular Couette flow, as well as  of the flow through a gradually expanding channel.
